How long have you been a musician?
Since I was 16.

Do you have any other passions or hobbies?
I’m a huge animal lover and I spend my time chasing after dogs and begging their owners for cuddles! And cats. Anything furry gets cuddled by me whether they like it or not.

What is your favourite song to perform?
Lost in Music

Where would you most like to perform?
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Fun Fact:
I have a giant rescue house bunny called Donkey, because he looks like a donkey.

Music Career:
Suzy is Firefly’s bandleader and founding member. When she’s not bouncing on stage with Firefly, she’s beavering away in the recording studio for her electronic dance music album which is due for release later on this year. Signed by Kobalt Music, the largest independent music publisher in the world, Suzy now shares the same publishing label as Calvin Harris, the Pet Shop Boys & Taylor Swift (but not the same bank balance!). Suzy was flown out to California by US rock band band, Kiss the Girl, to sing guest vocals on two songs which then featured on hit US TV shows: 90210 and Charmed, whilst also appearing on MTV. The songs were also used on the movie, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’ featuring Jennifer Aniston and Will Ferrell’s DVD boxset. A track she recorded with Kiss The Girl, featuring The Weather Girls, charted on Billboard and was synchronised with hit US TV show, The Franchise. Back on dry land, Suzy has been enjoying gigging at venues including Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey), Pride festivals and Oxford University.

 


 

Meet the band – Wendy Abrahams Backing Vocalist and Lead Vocalist in Firefly band

WENDY ABRAHAMS
Lead and backing vocalist

What is your role in the band?
Backing Vocalist/Lead Vocalist

How long have you been a musician?
5ft 8”

Do you have any other passions or hobbies?
Yoga/Pilates, Gardening, Walking, Baking and I’m one half of a double act with a talking mouse called Theo.

What is your favourite song to perform?
Anything that gets a crowd up on their feet dancing.

Where would you most like to perform?
The London Palladium

Fun Fact:
I’m a trained make-up artist and my most famous client was “Sooty”.

Music Career:
Wendy was trained at the Guildford School of Acting in Musical Theatre. She became a guest singer on the QE2 as well as singing in shows in Malta and Ibiza. Wendy has appeared in over fifteen Pantomimes as a singer/actress playing roles as diverse as Cinderella, Princess Jasmine, Prince Charming and Queen Rat. Recently she has appeared on the 80’s Music revival scene in Love Distraction – A Tribute To The Human League (along with Suzy) and Retro Electro, supporting artists including Jason Donovan, Toyah, Go West and Bad Manners. Wendy also appears as one half of family variety act – Theo The Mouse, touring regularly around the UK.

 


 

Dom Franks saxophone Firefly Band for hire

DOM FRANKS
Saxophonist and backing vocals

What is your role in the band? 
Sax player and occasional percussion botherer. Need to get round to singing too as I seem to be the only band member not to have taken on lead vocals at some point.

How long have you been a musician? 
Long enough to know better… strangely for a neerdowell sax player I started out at 7 as a chapel chorister, but quickly moved on to clarinet, then sax, getting my first paid gig at 15 and never looking back.

Do you have any other passions or hobbies? 
Languages (I speak French and Italian), reading, travel, art… not very rock’n’roll.

What is your favourite song to perform? 
With Firefly? Must be Le Freak… those Nile Rogers songs get everyone going, regardless of age.

Where would you most like to perform?
Glastonbury!

Fun Fact:
I’m secretly a massive choral geek and love Renaissance music.

Music Career:
Dom is a professional saxophonist and has played with Firefly since the very beginning! Already busy gigging by his teens, Dom won the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician award and played with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before going on to a session career in London playing with jazz, reggae, Latin, dance and pop groups including chart toppers Jocelyn Brown, Alison Limerick, London Beat and Paul Young as well as performing and arranging on international number 1 hit single ‘Mucho Mambo: Sway’. More recently Dom has released three albums of original material with his own jazz quartet, StrayHorn, and now performs as a freelancer all over the UK.

Music related – obsessed with the Beatles and a mild obsession with Queen

It varies every time I play
Where would I most like to perform?
On a rooftop in the town centre
Fun fact:
I appeared on Stars In Their Eyes, November 2000

Music Career:
Dave is a studio session guitarist as well as a professional musician. He has played on countless albums and radio jingles and is in high demand from recording studios and record labels. Next time you hear a radio jingle, it might just be Dave who penned the jingle and played on it! Dave’s other claim to fame is his appearance on Stars In Their Eyes as Robert Palmer. Dave entertained British television audiences with his brilliant rendition of Addicted to Love on guitar and vocals and got right to the finals!

 


 

Meet the band – Mark Butler bass player for Firefly band

Bass Player

How long have you been a musician?
40 years

Do you have any other passions or hobbies?
Off road motorcycling

What is your favourite song to perform?
Easy Lover

Where would you most like to perform?
Glastonbury

Fun Fact:
When I lived in New York I was Bootsy Collins and Sly and Robbie’s Driver for a few months

Music Career:
Mark’s musical career began in NYC, where he toured with bands including Crowded House, Living Colour, Sham 69, and Jesus & Mary Chain. After moving back to the UK, Mark played at major festivals including Womad, Cornbury and The Phoenix and Linton Blues Festival. Mark was soon snapped up by Neil Robinson of the James Taylor Quartet and John Cook from Ozzy Osbourne’s band to tour at UK jazz festivals and play in London clubs. Mark is currently playing with former Wishbone Ash legendary guitarist, Muddy Manninen and renowned saxophonist, Patsy Gamble, as well as the Steve Browning Band (when Firefly hasn’t snapped him up for gigs)!

MARTYN ALSOP

Drummer / Vocalist / Token Northerner

How long have you been a musician?
I’m a drummer, does that count? 40+ years

Do you have any other passions or hobbies?
Cinema and making music

Where would you most like to perform? 
Wembley Stadium

Fun Fact:
I love the ‘Batman’ films

Music Career:
Martyn loves playing the drums and singing lead and backing vocals in the band. He has graced the stage with many famous bands including being the support act for Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Culture Club. Martyn also supported Rose Royce, and they loved his playing and singing so much, they asked him back to support them on tour for a further four times! Martyn then decided to go to sunny Portugal and play professionally for several years, after which time Firefly persuaded him to return to rainy England to play with us!

Do you have any other passions or hobbies?
Java/SQL Programing & Tele.

What is your favourite song to perform?
Depends how I feel

Where would you most like to perform?
On the Moon

Fun Fact:
I was taught the piano in a Haunted Cottage

Music Career:
Paul is a classically trained musician and is the Musical Director in the band. He is a stickler for perfecting the songs to perfection and drives the band hard in rehearsals to create stunning musical arrangements for each song! He’s a bit of a tyrant in rehearsals, insisting we keep going until the songs are perfect, but we’re grateful to him as the result is fabulous! Paul has performed for celebrities including Terry Scott and Bernard Bresslaw and has performed live on radio shows including for the BBC. Paul is a classically trained musician and is the Musical Director in the band. He is a stickler for perfecting the songs to perfection and drives the band hard in rehearsals to create stunning musical arrangements for each song! He’s a bit of a tyrant in rehearsals, insisting we keep going until the songs are perfect, but we’re grateful to him as the result is fabulous! Paul is well known for his role as  Musical Director for popular musicals and Pantomimes.
